Definition 
The total number of days or part days of stay for all patients who were admitted for an episode of care and who underwent separation during the reference period. 

Same day patients are counted as having a stay of one day. Periods of leave are excluded where the patient was absent at midnight.  If a patient is on contract leave to another hospital the day(s) on contract are counted as patient days for the calculation of length of stay.  The day of admission is included in the count but not the day of separation.
