The country in which the person was born.
Ethnicity is an important concept, both in the study of disease patterns and in the need for and provision of services. Country of birth is the most easily collected and consistently reported of possible ethnicity data items. It is recognised that country of birth is one of a number surrogate measures for ethnicity.

Collection and Usage Attributes
The country list used was obtained from the ABS census database. Later the ABS developed the Australian Standard Classification of Countries for Social Statistics, which was later adopted by Qld Health (see version 2).
