ELECTIVE SURGERY (ADMITTED PATIENT CARE).
A not ready for care patient is either one of the following:
- staged patient whose medical condition will not require or be amenable to surgery until some future date. For example, a patient who has had internal fixation of a fractured bone and who will require removal of the fixation device after a suitable time; or
- deferred patient who for personal reasons is not yet prepared to be admitted to hospital. For example, a patient with work or other commitments, which preclude their being, admitted to hospital for a period of time.

A not ready for care patient may also be termed a staged or deferred waiting list patient. A Staged or Deferred patient should not be confused with a patient whose operation is postponed for reasons other than their own unavailability. For example, surgeon unavailable owing to emergency workload. This patient is still ready for care.

SPECIALIST OUTPATIENT SERVICES
(HOSPITAL NON-ADMITTED PATIENT CARE).
A not ready for care patient is either one of the following:
- patient whose health status precludes them from accepting an appointment; and /or
- patient who wishes to defer their appointment for personal reasons.

The application of 'not ready for care' status must be supported by reason for inability to accept outpatient clinic appointment. It is patient-focused and is not dependent upon the availability of human and material resources.

A patient who has identified that they are 'not ready for care' should not be included in counts of patients awaiting care/treatment. Also the period/s of time prescribed by a patient should not be included in any waiting time calculations.
