A separation is the process by which an admitted patient completes an episode of care. A separation may be formal or statistical.

Formal separation:
The administrative process by which a hospital records the completion of treatment and/or care and/or accommodation of an admitted patient. This generally occurs when a patient is discharged, is transferred to another institution, absconds, or dies whilst in care.

Statistical separation:
The administrative process by which a hospital records the completion of an episode of care for an admitted patient within the one hospital stay.

Collection and Usage Attributes
Treatment and/or care provided to a patient prior to separation occurs over a period of time and can occur in hospital and/or in the person's home (for hospital-in-the-home patients). Non-return from leave (mode of separation) is used when a patient goes on leave and does not return to the hospital within seven days. Note that the patient is to be discharged from the date that he/she left the hospital.
