Collection and Usage Attributes
A datum is a mathematical representation that best fits the shape of the earth. Accurate mapping and coordinate systems are based on a datum. The datum known as Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA94) ensures Australia is in line with the rest of the world's coordinate systems, and is totally compatible with satellite based navigation systems, for example Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

The equator is 0 degrees latitude, and the North and South Poles are located at 90 degrees north and 90 degrees south latitude respectively.

The 'X' in the latitude format symbolises the designator symbol "+" or "-" and should be placed prior to the first number. Latitudes north of the equator are positive and shall be designated by use of the plus sign (+), latitudes south of the equator are negative and shall be designated by use of the minus sign (-). The equator shall be designated by use of the plus sign (+).

The format X[N]N[.N(7)] allows for 1 or 2 digit latitudes (i.e. degree values) with the option of 0 to 7 decimal places (i.e. decimal degree values).

Corporate Reference Data System (CRDS) Facility Data Set:
Attribute type is GEOLAT (Geocode latitude). Geocoding is being progressively actioned and at this point in time is completed for hospitals, public community health facilities, public residential aged care services, primary health centres that were previously declared hospitals, and public young disabled residential care service facilities.

Geocoding information for a facility is maintained in CRDS by Statistical Services Branch (SSB) using the geocoding service Property Location Service Plus (PLS Plus)-Public provided by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) or Google Maps as the source for the information. For Queensland Health facilities in remote areas where location details are not available on Google maps, geocoding data provided by Department of Health (DoH) is used as the source.

The following process is followed to assign geocoding information to facilities:

Step 1
The facility addresses are first parsed through the PLSPlus-Public geocoding service.

Step 2
Results with low confidence (confidence < 100) are then compared with results from Google maps to determine if greater accuracy can be reached.
If there is a difference of more than 0.00001 decimal degrees between the geocoding returned by PLSPlus-Public and by Google Maps, Google Maps is used as the source.

Step 3
For facilities in remote areas where geocoding information is not available on PLSPlus-Public version or Google Maps, the geocoding provided by Department of Health (DoH) is used as the source.

Geographical coordinates (latitudes and longitudes) are the universal system for defining spatial position. A set of geographic coordinates on a datum is complete and unique, worldwide.
Positions of geographic features can be defined in space by a set of coordinates. In order for coordinates to be unique, the coordinate reference system needs to be fully defined.
A coordinate reference system is realised by a reference frame, which comprises a datum and a coordinate system.
