Guide for Use
For live births, birthweight should preferably be measured within the first hour of life before significant postnatal weight loss has occurred. While statistical tabulations include 500 grams groupings for birthweight, weights should not be recorded in those groupings. The actual weight should be recorded to the degree of accuracy to which it is measured.

In perinatal collections the birthweight is to be provided for liveborn and stillborn babies.
Verification Rules
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
If data element Product of birth-birth status = 2 (Stillbirth (fetal death)), baby must be >= 400 grams if gestation <20 weeks.
Must not be blank.
Right adjusted and zero filled from left.
Collection Methods
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
If the baby was a stillbirth, the birthweight must be >=400 grams or the gestation at least 20 weeks to be within the scope of the collection. If a stillbirth was less than 20 weeks gestation and less than 400 grams, then the baby is not in scope for the perinatal database. All livebirths are within scope, regardless of weight or gestation.
Comment
Weight is an important indicator of pregnancy outcome, is a major risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality and is required to analyse perinatal services for high-risk infants.
In the case of multiple births, this data element should be recorded for each baby born.
