Guide for Use 
A person's given name(s) can be:
- assigned by a person's parents shortly after birth or adoption or other cultural ceremony
- acquired by a person in accordance with a due process defined in a state or territory Act relating to the registration of births, deaths, marriages and changes of name and sex, and for related purposes
- attained by a person within the family group or by which that person is socially identified

Consideration shall be given to the unnecessary use of non-alphanumeric characters and symbols, which should be avoided wherever possible due to implications on system functionality.
Verification Rules 
Can be null.
Must not contain unidentified characters/symbols.
Collection Methods 
If the patient has a first given name then this data element is mandatory. 

If the first given name is not known or cannot be established, record 'UNKNOWN'. 

If the patient does not have both a first given name and a family name, then record the one name as family name and leave this data element blank.
