Collection and Usage Attributes
Code 1 Individual session
An occasion of service is regarded as an individual session when the service is provided to a single patient by same hospital staff (one or more) and the nature of the service would normally warrant dated entries in the clinical record of the patient involved. This also includes the situation where individuals belong to the same family. In such cases, the service is being provided to the family unit and as a result the session should be counted as a single occasion of service for the patient.

Code 2 Group session
An occasion of service is regarded as a group session when two or more patients are participating in the occasion of service at the same time by the same hospital staff (one or more) and the nature of the service would normally warrant dated entries in the clinical records of the patients involved.
Patient administration systems (eg: HBCIS, Cerner) have dedicated elective surgery and outpatient modules to collect this data.
The distinction between session types has resource implications.
