Collection and Usage Attributes
Code 02 Forceps
This code includes a vaginal breech with forceps to the after coming head.

Code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) and code 05 Classical Caesarean section
Includes the use of forceps/vacuum extraction to assist the extraction of the product of conception in a caesarean section or where a hysterotomy is performed to extract the product of conception.

Code 10 Vaginal (non-instrumental)
This code includes a vaginal breech that has been manually rotated.

This data element should be recorded in conjunction with the Birth event-anaesthesia administered indicator data element when method of birth is code 02 Forceps, code 03 Vacuum, code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) or code 05 Classical Caesarean section.

This data element should be recorded in conjunction with the Birth event-type of pharmacological analgesia administered data element when method of birth is code 02 Forceps, code 03 Vacuum, code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) or code 05 Classical Caesarean section and Birth event-anaesthesia administered indicator is code 2 Yes.

This data element should be recorded in conjunction with the Birth event-main reason for caesarean section code (ICD-10-AM 11th edn) data element when method of birth is code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) or code 05 Classical Caesarean section.

This data element should be recorded in conjunction with the Birth event-additional indication for caesarean section data element when method of birth is code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) or code 05 Classical Caesarean section, Birth event-main reason for caesarean section code (ICD-10-AM 11th edn) is completed and there is more than one reason for which a caesarean was performed.
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
Validated against list of method of birth codes.
Must not be blank.
Must be 04 (Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS)) or 05 (Classical Caesarean section) if Birth event-labour onset type = 3 (No labour (Caesarean section)).
In the case of multiple births, method of birth should be recorded for each baby born.

For reporting of the national standard, Birth event-birth method (NHDD), the following mapping occurs:
Code 02 Forceps is mapped to code 2 Vaginal - forceps
Code 03 Vacuum extractor is mapped to code 5 Vaginal - vacuum extraction
Code 04 Lower Segment Caesarean Section and code 05 Classical Caesarean Section are mapped to code 4 Caesarean section
Code 10 Vaginal (non-instrumental) is mapped to code 1 Vaginal - non-instrumental
Code 98 Other methods and code 99 Not stated/unknown are mapped to code 9 Not stated/inadequately described.
