To collect emergency department (ED) data to allow reporting to support service improvement, performance management and planning.

The collection contains information on patients' journey through the ED, describes the care and treatment provided and provides alerts.

Included are all patients who arrive, and are registered to receive care, at an ED at any of the Queensland ED Reporting Hospitals.

ED data is published regularly through the Queensland Health Hospital Performance website and through national publications and websites.

Accessibility 
ED data is accessed through the Queensland Health Enterprise Reporting Service (QHERS) and through the Decision Support System (DSS). Access to ED data can be requested through the Hospital Access Analysis Team in the Clinical Access and Redesign Unit by emailing HAAT@health.qld.gov.au.

Methodology 
Data is entered into the Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) at each reporting hospital. As EDIS is an enterprise application with a single database, information is reported straight from the EDIS Reporting Database, which refreshes from the live EDIS Database every 5 minutes or less.

Reporting Requirements
Hospital and Health Services use the data in the collection to monitor emergency department activity and performance. The Department of Health uses the data in the collection to monitor ED activity and performance, and to conduct analysis to support service improvement, planning and purchasing strategies. Commonwealth reporting requirements for ED National Minimum Data Sets are identified by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The data from the collection is reported on the Hospital Performance website to provide transparency of activity and performance to the public.
