Collection and Usage Attributes
To collect demographic and radiation therapy service data from Queensland Health radiation services in scope of the RTDC, for state and national reporting purposes.
RTDC is a unit record level data collection where the unit record is a radiotherapy course of treatment.

Five public hospitals in Queensland Health are in-scope, with the list of hospitals included in the Site Implemented section below.

Records in scope for the RTDC are identified as those where a radiotherapy course of treatment was started within the reporting period. Treatment starts with the first fraction delivered and does not include the planning or simulation stages of radiotherapy.

A patient can receive more than one course of radiotherapy treatment at the same time (i.e. courses which are simultaneous or which overlap). These courses may have the same or different ready-for-care dates and the same or different radiotherapy start dates.

Only a radiation oncologist can prescribe a course of radiotherapy treatment. A prescription is not equal to a course of radiotherapy treatment. A prescription may be for one or more courses of radiotherapy treatment. A prescription outlines the anatomical region/sites to be treated and is for a prescribed dose at a defined volume (fractionation) over a defined period of time.

One course of radiotherapy treatment may cover multiple phases and multiple treatment plans.

IN-CONFIDENCE
Access to the RTDC is at the discretion of the Data Custodian.
Unit record information is supplied by facilities in electronic format, for all patients who started a radiotherapy course of treatment during the reporting quarter. Data is submitted to the Healthcare Improvement Unit by midnight on the last calendar day of the month after the reporting quarter.
Queensland Health is required to meet national reporting obligations to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The AIHW has established the Radiotherapy Waiting Times NMDS to collect patient level information in the radiation therapy domain.

The RTDC has been designed to collect the minimum required to meet the reporting outputs above, however the custodian, Healthcare Improvement Unit, can further support the radiation therapy domain through operational reporting and benchmarking across services in regard to access and service improvements.

Through the information collected the Department of Health can undertake planning, monitoring and purchasing activities for publicly funded health services on behalf of the state to optimise health gains, reduce inequalities and maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the health system.
