Guide for Use
When more than one type of anaesthesia was used, record all types administered.
This data element should be used in conjunction with the data element: Birth event-anaesthesia administered indicator to obtain information on if anaesthesia was administered to the mother during the labour and/or delivery.
Code 02 Local anaesthetic to perineum
A local anaesthetic to the perineum was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. Local anaesthetic to perineum is the infiltration of the perineum with a local anaesthetic.
Code 03 Pudendal
A pudendal block was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. A pudendal block is an injection of a local anaesthetic to the pudendal nerves.
Code 04 Epidural
An epidural block was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. An epidural block is an injection of a local anaesthetic into the epidural space of the spinal column.
Code 05 Spinal
A spinal block was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. A spinal block is an injection of an analgesic drug or anaesthetic drug into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord, also called the Subarachnoid Block Anaesthesia.
Code 06 General anaesthesia
General anaesthesia was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. General anaesthesia includes various anaesthetic agents given primarily by inhalation or intravenous injection.
Code 07 Caudal
A caudal block was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. A caudal block is an injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the caudal portion of the spinal canal through the sacrum.
Code 10 Combined spinal-epidural
A combined spinal-epidural block was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. A combined spinal-epidural block is a needle-through-needle injection of an analgesic drug or anaesthetic drug into both the epidural space and the subarachnoid space of the spinal column.
The spinal-epidural block combines the benefits of rapid action of a spinal block and the flexibility of an epidural block. An epidural catheter inserted during the technique enables the provision of long-lasting analgesia with the ability to titrate the dose for the desired effect.
Code 19 Other
A type of analgesia not defined above was administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby. May include parenteral opioids, nitrous oxide.
Code 99 Not stated/unknown
The type analgesia administered to the mother for the operative/instrumental delivery of the baby is not known.

Verification Rules
Must not be blank if Birth event-method of birth is code 02 (Forceps), code 03 (Vacuum), code 04 (Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS)) or code 05 (Classical Caesarean section).
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
If Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC)-baby's code type is code S (Anaesthesia) then:
Validated against list of anaesthesia codes.
Record must not exist if Birth event-anaesthesia administered indicator = 1 (No) or 9 (Not stated/unknown).
Record must exist if Birth event-anaesthesia administered indicator = 2 (Yes).
Collection Methods
Code 10 cannot be recorded if code 04 and code 05 have already been recorded.
This item should be recorded for operative or instrumental delivery of the baby only. It does not include the removal of the placenta.
For national reporting of the Birth event-type of anaesthesia administered (NHDD) data element following mapping occurs:
Code 02 Local anaesthetic to perineum is mapped to code 2 Local anaesthetic to perineum.
Code 03 Pudendal is mapped to code 3 Pudendal block.
Code 04 Epidural is mapped to code 4 Epidural or caudal block.
Code 05 Spinal is mapped to code 5 Spinal block.
Code 06 General anaesthesia is mapped to code 6 General anaesthesia.
Code 07 Caudal is mapped to code 4 Epidural or caudal block.
Code 10 Combined spinal-epidural is mapped to code 7 Combined spinal-epidural block.
Code 19 Other is mapped to code 88 Other anaesthesia.
Code 99 Not stated/unknown is mapped to code 99 Not stated/inadequately described.
Comments
Anaesthetic use may affect the health status of the baby and is an indicator of obstetric intervention.
