Collection and Usage Attributes
Guide for Use
Alignment with this standard is not mandatory for legacy systems. However, for any new system where the collection of Medicare number is required, the collection of 11 digits is mandatory.
New
Verification Rules
Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
Transmit as blank if not available or if null.
Collection Methods
The 11 digit medicare number maybe collected either as one 11-digit field or as two fields (10+1 digit): the 10 digit family number in one field and the 1 digit person number in another field.
Comments
Some legacy systems that do not fully comply with this standard may still exist (eg. Those collecting 10 digits only). Under Medicare, each eligible family in the population is assigned a unique identifying number. This number, together with age and sex, provides an essentially unique identifier.
