Collection and Usage Attributes
When more than one type of pharmacological analgesia was used, record all types administered.

This data element should be used in conjunction with the data element: Birth event-pharmacological analgesia administered indicator to obtain information on if analgesia was administered to the mother during the birth event.

CODE 02 Nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. Nitrous oxide is a gas providing light anaesthesia delivered in various concentrations with oxygen.

CODE 04 Epidural
An epidural block was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. An epidural block is an injection of a local anaesthetic into the epidural space of the spinal column.

CODE 05 Spinal
A spinal block was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. A spinal block is an injection of an analgesic drug or anaesthetic drug into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord, also called the Subarachnoid Block Anaesthesia.

CODE 07 Caudal
A caudal block was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. A caudal block is an injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the caudal portion of the spinal canal through the sacrum.

CODE 08 Systemic opioid (inc IM/IV narcotic)
A systemic opioid/s was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. A systemic opioid is an analgesic that acts on the patient's central nervous system. Includes drugs which have an agonist action at the opioid receptor on the cell. Includes intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) opioids.

CODE 10 Combined spinal-epidural
A combined spinal-epidural block was administered to the mother for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery. A combined spinal-epidural block is an needle-through-needle injection of an analgesic drug or anaesthetic drug into both the epidural space and the subarachnoid space of the spinal column. The spinal-epidural block combines the benefits of rapid action of a spinal block and the flexibility of an epidural block. An epidural catheter inserted during the technique enables the provision of long-lasting analgesia with the ability to titrate the dose for the desired effect.

CODE 19 Other
A method of pharmacological pain relief not defined above was administered to the mother during the labour and/or delivery.

CODE 99 Not stated/unknown
The method of pharmacological pain relief administered to the mother during the labour and/or delivery is not known.
Birth event-pharmacological analgesia administered indicator must be code 2 (Yes).

Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
If Baby's code type = A then:
Validated against list of pharmacological analgesia codes.
Record must exist if pharmacological analgesia flag = 2.
Record must not exist if pharmacological analgesia flag = 1 or 9.
Code 10 cannot be recorded if Code 04 and Code 05 have already been recorded.

This item is to be recorded for first and second stage labour, but not for third stage labour, e.g. removal of placenta.

For national reporting of the Birth event-type of analgesia administered data element the following mapping occurs:
Code 02 Nitrous oxide is mapped to code 2 Nitrous oxide.
Code 04 Epidural is mapped to code 4 Epidural or caudal block.
Code 05 Spinal is mapped to code 5 Spinal block.
Code 07 Caudal is mapped to code 4 Epidural or caudal block.
Code 08 Systemic opioid (inc IM/IV narcotic) is mapped to code 6 Systemic opioids.
Code 10 Combined spinal-epidural is mapped to code 7 Combined spinal-epidural block.
Code 19 Other is mapped to code 88 Other analgesia.
Code 99 Not stated/unknown is mapped to code 99 Not stated/inadequately described.
Analgesia use may influence the duration of labour, may affect the health status of the baby at birth and is an indicator of obstetric intervention. Analgesia may also influence a woman's satisfaction with her birth experience and is an indicator of women's access to anaesthesia services, i.e. epidural analgesia is not available for women in birth events where there are no anaesthetic services.
