Guide for Use
Tobacco cigarette smoking refers to tobacco delivered to the user in the form of a cigarette and does not include pipes or cigars.
If a woman reports having quit tobacco cigarette smoking at some point after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the value recorded should be the number of tobacco cigarettes usually smoked per day prior to quitting.
Occasional tobacco cigarette smoking (less than one): Women who report that they usually smoked less than one tobacco cigarette per day after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy should have a value of 998 recorded.
Not stated/inadequately described: Women who cannot state or inadequately describe the number of tobacco cigarettes usually smoked per day after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy should have a value of 999 recorded.
'Usually' is defined as 'according to established, or frequent usage; commonly, ordinarily; as a rule'.
To ensure consistency of results, data should be collected after the birth. 'After 20 weeks of pregnancy' is defined as greater than or equal to 20 weeks + 0 days.
