One of twenty-three mutually exclusive major diagnostic categories (MDCs) that correspond to a single body system or aetiology. In general these are associated with a particular medical specialty. An additional two categories address exceptions (pre-MDCs) and errors. They are derived from the Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) code.

Collection and Usage Attributes
Hospital Based Corporate Information System (HBCIS):
MDCs are calculated at the facility using the "derived from" related data items. Transmit as fixed width 3 character, left adjusted, blank if null.

Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
As part of QHAPDC processing of inpatient data by the Data Collections Unit (DCU), MDCs are re-calculated using the "derived from" related data items and any discrepancies with facility calculated items are queried with the facility.
The development of the Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Group (AR-DRG) classification has created a descriptive framework for studying hospitalisation. DRGs provide a summary of the varied reasons for hospitalisation and the complexity of cases a hospital treats. Moreover, as a framework for describing the products of a hospital (that is, patients receiving services), they allow meaningful comparisons of hospitals' efficiency and effectiveness under alternative systems of health care provision.
The AR-DRGs are a patient classification scheme consisting of classes of patients who are similar clinically and in terms of their consumption of hospital resources. AR-DRG version 6.0x was released by the IHPA as part of the national introduction of Activity Based Funding (ABF) and is for use with ICD-10-AM/ACHI 7th edition codes from 1 July 2012. Implementation of the 7th edition of ICD-10-AM / ACHI / ACS began on 1 July 2010 and will continue to be used until 30 June 2013. Version 6.0x of the AR-DRG will also be used until 30 June 2013.
