Collection and Usage Attributes
An episode of admitted patient care is a phase of treatment (reflected by the care type). There may be more than one episode of admitted patient care within one hospital stay.

An episode of admitted patient care begins on the date the person meets the criteria to be admitted (formally or statistically) to a hospital for a particular care type.

An episode of admitted patient care ends when the principal clinical purpose (and thus care type) changes or when the patient is formally separated from the facility.

Separation may be formal as the result of death, discharge, or transfer to another facility, or a statistical separation to a different care type.

The treatment and/or care provided to a patient during an episode of admitted care can occur in hospital and/or in the person's home (for hospital-in-the-home patients).

Persons with a care type of Hospital boarder or Organ procurement-posthumous are excluded as they are not considered to be admitted patients.
Prior to implementation of this data element concept in Queensland the definition had applied to the now superseded data element Episode of care QHLTH 040019. A new Episode of care data element concept has been implemented with a more general definition for use outside of the formal/statistical admission definition which only applies to episode of admitted patient care. With the introduction of the new concepts, Queensland is fully aligned with Australian Institute of Health and Welfare definitions for Episode of admitted patient care and Episode of care.
