Collection and Usage Attributes
The year of death may not be the same as the registration year, as the death registration number is assigned in the year the death is actually registered. The registration number is a concatenation of the year the death is registered followed by a five digit number. The five digit numbers are divided into deaths from rural areas YYYY00001 to YYYY12000, and deaths from urban areas YYYY50001 to YYYY99999.
Accurate cause of death information is important to the public health sector and medical researchers to evaluate and develop measures to improve the health of Australians generally. It is also important to family members, now and for the future, to know what caused a loved one's death and to be aware of conditions that may occur in other family members.
