Definition
Expected compensable status at the time of admission.
A compensable patient is a patient who may be entitled to the payment of, or who has been paid compensation for, damages or other benefits (including payment in settlement of a claim for compensation, damages or other benefits) in respect of injury, illness or disease for which he/she is receiving care and treatment.
A compensable patient is a person who:
* is entitled to claim damages under Motor Vehicle Compulsory Third Party insurance; or
* is entitled to claim damages under the Queensland Workers' Compensation Act or under a Workers' Compensation Act other than Queensland (e.g. if an employee of the Commonwealth or if employed interstate); or
* has or may have an entitlement to claim under public liability.
A Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) patient is not compensable in the strict interpretation of the word, but is a patient for whom another agency (the DVA) has accepted responsibility for the payment of any charges relating to his/her episode of care.
In the case of motor vehicle accidents occurring after 1 September 1994, these must be classified as either Motor Vehicle (Queensland) or Motor Vehicle (Other).
In the case of motor vehicle accidents occurring before 1 September 1994, these patients must be classified as Other Third Party.
