Collection and Usage Attributes
This code must be used in conjunction with an injury or poisoning code and can be used with other disease codes. The external cause should be coded to the complete ICD-10-AM classification.

An external cause code should be sequenced following the related injury or poisoning code, or following the group of codes, if more than one injury or condition has resulted from this external cause. Provision should be made to record more than one external cause if appropriate.

External cause codes in the range V00 to Y89 must be accompanied by a place of occurrence code.

External cause codes V00 to Y34 must be accompanied by an activity code U50-U73.
Must be a valid ICD-10-AM 11th edition code.
ICD-10-AM codes are validated against a number of national and state edits (e.g. age, sex, cannot be PD, rare, combination, COF, etc) to improve coding quality.
Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
An external cause code may be used in conjunction with any diagnosis code in ICD-10-AM but must be used with codes from:
- E89 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of endocrine and metabolic disorders, not elsewhere classified
- G97 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of nervous system, not elsewhere classified
- H59 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of eye and adnexa, not elsewhere classified
- H95 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of ear and mastoid process, not elsewhere classified
- I97 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of circulatory system, not elsewhere classified
- J95 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of respiratory disorders, not elsewhere classified
- K91 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of digestive system, not elsewhere classified
- M96 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of musculoskeletal disorders, not elsewhere classified
- N99 Intraoperative and postprocedural disorders of genitourinary system, not elsewhere classified
- T80-T88 Complications of surgical and medical care, not elsewhere classified
- S00-T98 Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes
- Z04.1-Z04.5 Examination and observation for other reasons.

- Where the principal diagnosis requires external cause codes, the external cause codes are to be sequenced directly after the principal diagnosis, then followed by other diagnosis codes.
- Where there are multiple diagnosis codes that require external cause codes, ncluding the principal diagnosis, the principal diagnosis code is to be assigned with the external cause codes, followed by the remaining related diagnosis codes and repeated external cause codes again.
- Where there are multiple diagnosis codes that require different external cause codes, including the principal diagnosis, the principal diagnosis code is to be assigned with the external cause codes, followed by the remaining diagnosis codes and related external cause codes.
- If there are multiple diagnosis codes that require the same external cause codes, including the principal diagnosis, but an additional diagnosis code such as Z50.9 Care involving use of rehabilitation procedure, unspecified is required, the above principles are applied, and the additional diagnosis code is sequenced after the diagnosis they relate to.
- Where the additional diagnosis requires external cause codes, the external cause codes are to be sequenced directly after the related additional diagnosis, then followed by other diagnosis codes.
- Where there are multiple additional diagnosis codes that require the same external cause codes but occur as different events, the external cause codes should be sequenced following the last of the additional diagnosis codes that it relates to.

Examples to support external cause code sequencing are included in Section 9.4 External cause sequencing within the QHAPDC Manual.

Punctuation is excluded in QHAPDC.

Queensland Trauma Data Collection:
ATR validation: valid ICD-10-AM 11th edn code
ATR correspondence: single
The single environmental event, circumstance or condition (external factor) which was the primary circumstance or cause of the trauma event.
Enables categorisation of injury cause and identify trends in defining and monitoring cause of injuries.
This code must be used in conjunction with an injury or poisoning code and can be used with other disease codes. The external cause should be coded to the complete ICD-10-AM classification.
If two or more cause categories are judged to be equally important, select the one that comes first in the code list.
An external cause code should be sequenced following the related injury or poisoning code, or following the group of codes, if more than one injury or condition has resulted from this external cause.
Enables categorisation of injury and poisoning according to factors important for injury control. This information is necessary for defining and monitoring injury control targets, injury costing and identifying cases for in-depth research. It is also used as a quality of care indicator of adverse patient outcomes.
