Guide for Use
The episode end is when the emergency department/service episode was completed and no more care was actively provided to the patient. This data element describes the status of the patient at the end of this episode.
Code 1 Admitted
This code must be used where the patient was admitted to a hospital ward following the end of the episode. Although admission to a Short Stay Unit (code 10) and admission to a Hospital in the Home service (codes 11 and 12) are also admitted, these have been separated to provide more granularities in the statewide dataset.
Code 2 Emergency service episode completed and discharged
This code must be used where the patient completed a non-admitted emergency care episode and was discharged from the hospital without admission or transfer.
Code 3 Transferred to another hospital
This code must be used where the patient completed a non-admitted emergency care episode and was transferred to another hospital for admission.
Code 4 Did not wait
This code must be used where the patient was registered and triaged with the intention to receive care in the emergency department/service but left before being attended by a health care professional.
Code 5 Left at own risk after treatment commenced
This code must be used where the patient was registered, triaged and received care in the emergency department / service and left after being attended by a health care professional but before the care was complete.
Code 6 Died in the emergency department/service
This code must be used where the patient died after arriving at the emergency department/service.
Code 7 Dead on arrival (no treatment provided in the emergency department/service)
This code must be used where the patient died before arriving at the emergency department / service.
Code 8 Admitted to the emergency department/service
This code must be used where the patient was admitted to a bed within the emergency department or service. This admission destination must be within the same area that the patient was treated for their emergency stay that is separate from the SSU and the observation ward.
Code 9 Admitted to observation ward
This code must be used where the patient was admitted to an observation ward that is separate from the area where the emergency stay occurred but is not a designated SSU.
Code 10 Admitted to Short Stay Unit
The code must be used where the patient was admitted to a Short Stay Unit (SSU). An SSU must conform to the definition described in the Emergency Department Short Stay Unit Guideline #QH-GDL-352:2014.
Code 11 Admitted to Hospital in the Home service
This code must be used where the patient received care in the emergency department/service as a non-admitted patient and at the episode end was admitted to a Hospital in the Home service.
Code 12 Returned to Hospital in the Home service
This code must be used where the patient was under the care of a Hospital in the Home service, received care in the emergency department/service and at the episode end returned to the Hospital in the Home service.
Code 13 Hospital in the Home patient transferred to ward
This code must be used where the patient was under the care of a Hospital in the Home service, received care in the emergency department/service and at the episode end was transferred to a hospital ward to continue the admitted patient episode.
Code 14 Registered, triaged and referred elsewhere without receiving care
This code must be used where the patient was registered and triaged and the emergency department/service advised of an alternative service, which the patient acted upon without receiving treatment in the emergency department/service. It includes only patients who, at the time of their departure, provided a reasonable indication that they intended to seek care from another health service. If it is unclear whether the person intends to seek treatment from another health service, but the patient was not present at the time of the offer of treatment provision, code 4 (Did not wait) should be used.
