Historically, accredited teaching hospitals were notified in the Queensland Government Gazette. However, gazettal did not have any legal effect and with the repeal of the Health Services Act (replaced by the Hospital and Health Boards (HHB) Act) there was no continuing need to gazette teaching hospitals. Consequently the new HHB Act does not include an equivalent Part on teaching hospitals.
Hospitals are 'accredited' by the appropriate accreditation entity (i.e. Royal Aust College of Surgeons etc) as being teaching hospitals in accordance with national standards and processes. Once a hospital has been accredited as a teaching hospital there is no further notification/declaration etc needed by the Minister at a state level.
Hospitals wanting accreditation as a teaching hospital are advised to contact the Australian Medical Council to inquire further. Once they have received the appropriate accreditation, there is nothing more to be done under state legislation.
