Collection and Usage Attributes
Assigning the clinical priority category is a clinical decision made by the radiation oncologist.

The Clinical priority category provided must be the Clinical priority category at the time the radiotherapy treatment started.

Code 1 Emergency care
The treating clinician has assessed that the waiting time for commencement of treatment cannot exceed 24 hours.

This is an extremely small group of people with cancer for whom emergency, same day radiation treatment is required and given within 24 hours. Examples of this would include malignant spinal cord compression, uncontrolled bleeding or mediastinal / airway compression threatening imminent death.

Code 2 High priority care
The treating clinician has assessed that the waiting time for commencement of treatment should not exceed 14 days.

This is a large group of people with cancer who broadly fall in two categories: people being treated for a cure where there is evidence that a delay to commence within this time frame will adversely affect the outcome; and people who have pressing cancer symptoms such as pain and endure personal suffering or other complications as a consequence of delay.

Code 3 Planned care
The treating clinician has assessed that the waiting time for the commencement of treatment should not exceed 28 days.

This is a large group of people with cancer who need planned radiation treatment as a major part of their cancer care. Often this course of radiation treatment is combined with surgery and chemotherapy and can be planned for in advance.
Must not be null.
Must be a valid value.
This data element is mapped to the Patient-clinical emergency indicator as follows:
