Hospital
A health care facility established under the Commonwealth, State or Territory legislation as a hospital or free-standing day procedure unit and authorised to provide treatment and or care to the patients.
Birth Centre
A facility where women are able to birth in an environment which:
- is free-standing or physically separate from a labour ward but has access to emergency medical facilities for both mother and child if required; and
- has a home like atmosphere; and
- focuses the care on a model of care (e.g. midwifery model) which ensures continuity of care; a family centred approach and informed client participation in choices related to the management of care.
Home
May be the mother's own home or where the baby is born in a home environment, where home may actually be that of a midwifery practitioner or any other person and attended by a midwifery practitioner.
Freebirth
Is a birth where no medical professional who is trained to direct the birth process is in attendance.
Code 7 Freebirth is only for use by the Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC) team.

Comments
Women who plan to give birth in birth centres or at home usually or in freebirth have different risk factors for outcome compared to those who plan to give birth in hospitals. Women who are transferred to hospital after the onset of labour have increased risks of intervention and adverse outcomes.
