Standard unit codes were developed due to a need to more readily analyse treating doctor unit/specialty information across all hospitals.
In public hospitals, standard unit codes are mapped from 'treating doctor' units. The mapping is done on a 'best fit' by the hospital, i.e. that unit that best reflects the hospital unit's activity.
Standard unit codes in the range PYAA to PYZZ can only be used by facilities with designated psychiatric units.
