The number of days or part days of stay accrued during the reference period. Days are accrued by admitted patients who underwent separation during the reference period or were remaining in the hospital at the end of the reference period. Same day patients are counted as having a stay of one day. Within the reference period, periods of leave are excluded where the patient was absent at midnight. The day of admission is included in the count if it occurred within the reference period. The day of separation is excluded.
