Collection and Usage Attributes
The specialty is one object in a hierarchy that describes the unit to which the patient will be assigned upon their admission for a planned procedure.

Dependent upon the planned procedure and the treating doctor, a unit will be assigned to the patient which is the location in the hospital where the patient will be admitted before and/or after their procedure.

Generally, in Queensland public hospitals, the patient is assigned to a treating doctor, who is mapped to a treating doctor unit, which is mapped to a standard unit code, which is mapped to a specialty. All mappings are done on a 'best fit' basis, reflecting the majority of activity within a unit.
Must not be null with admitted patient elective surgery admission records.
For national reporting of the Elective surgery waiting list episode-surgical specialty (of scheduled doctor) (NHDD) data element the following mapping occurs:
Code 01 Cardiothoracic surgery is mapped to code 01 Cardio-thoracic surgery.
Code 02 Otolaryngology head and neck surgery is mapped to code 02 Otolaryngology head and neck surgery.
Code 03 General surgery is mapped to code 03 General surgery.
Code 04 Gynaecology surgery is mapped to code 04 Gynaecology surgery.
Code 05 Neurosurgery is mapped to code 05 Neurosurgery.
Code 06 Ophthalmology is mapped to code 06 Ophthalmology surgery.
Code 07 Orthopaedic surgery is mapped to code 07 Orthopaedic surgery.
Code 08 Plastic and reconstructive surgery is mapped to code 08 Plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Code 09 Urological surgery is mapped to code 09 Urological surgery.
Code 10 Vascular surgery is mapped to code 10 Vascular surgery.
Code 11 Other - surgical is mapped to code 11 Other.
Code 12 Paediatric surgery is mapped to code 12 Paediatric surgery.

Code 90 Non-surgical data does not form part of the NMDS data element, Elective surgery waiting list episode-surgical specialty (of scheduled doctor) (NHDD).

This data element is only supplied by Public Hospital Services.
From 2016-2017, the NMDS data element has been revised to describe the surgical specialties as aligned to the specialties recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. This specifically expands the data domain to include paediatric surgery as a unique code.

The Healthcare Improvement Unit (HIU) decided that describing the surgical specialty as the specialty area of the unit to which the patient will be assigned upon admission, would be more useful to retain in reporting and evaluating operational service areas, than describing the surgical specialty as the qualification of the treating doctor. It is expected that changing over from the existing description to the new would result in reduced granularity, particularly in the expected homogenisation of paediatric surgery. Queensland will continue to use this data element as the source for reporting to the NMDS data element.
