Collection and Usage Attributes
The total number of hours and minutes is to be reported by public hospitals that have either an approved level 6 adult intensive care unit (standard ward code ICU6) or an approved level 6 children's intensive care service (standard ward code CIC6) as listed in the Clinical Services Capability Framework (CSCF). In the CSCF a level 6 children's intensive care service is the only designated paediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Adult Intensive Care Unit, Level 6
The unit must be capable of providing complex, multisystem life support for an indefinite period; be a tertiary referral centre for patients in need of intensive care services and have extensive backup laboratory and clinical service facilities to support the tertiary referral role. It must be capable of providing mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal renal support services and invasive cardiovascular monitoring for an indefinite period; or care of a similar nature.

Children's Intensive Care Service, Level 6
The service must be capable of providing complex, multisystem life support for an indefinite period; be a tertiary referral centre for children needing intensive care; and have extensive backup laboratory and clinical service facilities to support this tertiary role. It must be capable of providing mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal renal support services and invasive cardiovascular monitoring for an indefinite period to infants and children less than 16 years of age; or care of a similar nature.
Must not be greater than 9999959.
Last 2 digits must not be greater than 59.
Must be completed if Clinical ward specialty-standard ward code is code ICU6 (Intensive Care Unit Level 6) or CIC6 (Children's Intensive Care Service Level 6).

Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
Must be transmitted as a 7 character string, right adjusted and zero filled from the left.
For the purposes of calculating the length of stay in an intensive care unit, begin the calculation with the following:
- Arrival of the patient in the intensive care unit.

End the calculation with one of the following:
- Discharge, death or transfer of a patient from the intensive care unit; or
- Change of episode type.

Where an episode of admitted patient care involves more than one period spent in an intensive care unit, the total number of hours is to be reported for all periods during the episode of care.

The time spent in an operating theatre or in a coronary care unit is not counted.

Where there is a contracted service episode, Hospital A will report the total duration spent in the intensive care unit of Hospital B in addition to any length of time spent in Hospital A. Hospital B will only report the total time spent in the intensive care unit in Hospital B.

If the duration of length of stay in an intensive care unit is equal to or greater than 99999 hours 59 minutes, report 99999 hours 59 minutes (9999959).

For national reporting of the Episode of admitted patient care-length of stay in intensive care unit, total hours (NHDD) data element the value domain of this data element is reported as follows to the nearest hour in the hhhh format. For example:
- If the total length of stay in the intensive care unit is 98 hours 30 minutes, round up to 99 hours (0099).
- If the total length of stay in the intensive care unit is 98 hours 29 minutes, round down to 98 hours (0098).
- If the total length of stay in the intensive care unit is equal to or greater than 99999 hours, report 9999 hours (9999).

Note: 0-29 minutes is rounded down, and 30-59 minutes is rounded up.

Hospital Based Corporate Information System (HBCIS):
Reported as the total time in hours and minutes that the patient was admitted to a ward or bed assigned a standard ward/bed category of ICU6 or CIC6, plus any time spent in ICU on contract leave.

The total hours are calculated automatically by HBCIS looking at the patient's ward/bed occupancy plus any time reported as Contracted ICU (i.e. data recorded in Field 05 'Contracted ICU' within the CONTRACTED CARE screen).
