Collection and Usage Attributes
Code 1 Vertex
Presentation at birth is the upper back part of the fetal head. That is, the occiput is the point of reference.

Code 2 Breech
Presentation at birth is the buttocks or legs. Includes breech with extended legs, breech with flexed legs, footling and knee presentations.

Code 4 Face
Presentation at birth is the face. That is, the fetal head is hyper-extended and the area of the head below the root of the nose and the orbital ridge is at the cervical os.

Code 5 Brow
Presentation at birth is the brow. That is, the fetal head is partly extended and the area of the head between the anterior fontanelle and the root of the nose is at the cervical os.

Code 6 Other cephalic
Presentation at birth is the head, other than vertex, face or brow. That is, the fetus is in a longitudinal lie with the head entering the pelvis first. For example, deflexed occipito posterior.

Code 7 Transverse/shoulder
Presentation at birth is either transverse or the shoulder.
Transverse: the long axis of the fetal body is across the long axis of the mother's body.
Shoulder: the fetal head is in the iliac fossa and the shoulder is at the cervical os.

Code 8 Other
Presentation at birth is none of the above. For example, compound presentation.

Code 9 Not stated/unknown
Presentation at birth is not stated or unknown. For example, fetus papyraceus, or macerated fetus.
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
Must not be blank.
Validated against list of presentation codes.
In the case of multiple births, presentation should be recorded for each birth.

For national reporting of the Birth event-birth presentation data element the following mapping occurs:
Code 1 Vertex is mapped to code 1 Vertex.
Code 2 Breech is mapped to code 2 Breech.
Code 4 Face is mapped to code 3 Face.
Code 5 Brow is mapped to code 4 Brow.
Code 6 Other cephalic is mapped to code 8 Other.
Code 7 Transverse/shoulder is mapped to code 8 Other.
Code 8 Other is mapped to code 8 Other.
Code 9 Not stated/unknown is mapped to code 9 Not stated/inadequately described.
Presentation types other than vertex are associated with higher rates of caesarean section, instrumental birth, perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity.
