Collection and Usage Attributes
Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
As part of QHAPDC processing of admitted patient data by the HSU, DRGs are calculated using the "derived from" related data items and any discrepancies with facility calculated items are queried with the facility.

Multiple AR-DRG version codes are generated and made available by the HSU for funding and reporting purposes. However for 2013-14, DRG data will not be supplied by jurisdictions but will instead be calculated by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA) from derivable data.
The development of the Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRG) has created a descriptive framework for studying hospitalisation. DRGs provide a summary of the varied reasons for hospitalisation and the complexity of cases a hospital treats. Moreover, as a framework for describing the products of a hospital (that is, patients receiving services), they allow meaningful comparisons of hospitals' efficiency and effectiveness under alternative systems of health care provision.
The Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Group is derived from a range of data collected on admitted patients, including diagnosis and procedure information, classified using ICD-10-AM/ACHI. AR-DRG version 7.0 was released for use with ICD-10-AM/ACHI 8th edition codes from 1 July 2013.
