EDSS Emergency Department Short Stay Unit
As per clause C48 of the National Health Reform Agreement-National Partnership Agreement on Improving Public Hospital Services (NPA IPHS), as follows:
a) Designated and designed for the short term treatment, observation, assessment and reassessment of patients initially triaged and assessed in the emergency department (ED);
b) Have specific admission and discharge criteria and policies;
c) Designed for short term stays no longer than 24 hours;
d) Physically separated from the ED acute assessment area;
e) Have a static number of beds with oxygen, suction, patient ablution facilities; and
f) Not a temporary ED overflow area nor used to keep patients solely awaiting an inpatient bed nor awaiting treatment in the ED.

HOME Hospital in the home
Credentialed services funded and/or provided to admitted patients in their home environment.

A ward that has been assigned to a Specialised Mental Health Psychiatric Unit for the provision of acute psychiatric care.

MENC Specialised Mental Health Acute Crisis Care
A ward that has been assigned to a Specialised Mental Health Psychiatric Unit for the provision of acute crisis care.

MENN Specialised Mental Health Non-Acute Psychiatric
A ward that has been assigned to a Specialised Mental Health Psychiatric Unit for the provision of non-acute psychiatric care.

MENR Specialised Mental Health Residential
A ward that has been assigned to a Specialised Mental Health Residential Unit for the provision of residential psychiatric care.

MIXC Mixed Ward - Critical Care
Hospitals that have wards with mixed critical care specialisation/s should use a standard ward code of MIXC. This will highlight that the ward has a Critical Service capability of a mixed nature. Example: ICU/CCU ward.

MIXG Mixed Ward - Non-Critical Care
Hospitals that have wards with mixed specialisation/s of a non-critical care nature should use a standard ward code of MIXG.
Examples: maternity/gynaecology ward, chemotherapy/surgical ward, medical/general acute.

NSV4 Neonatal Service Level 4
As per Queensland Health Clinical Services Capability Framework (CSCF) version 3.2, Neonatal services.

NSV5 Neonatal Service Level 5
As per Queensland Health Clinical Services Capability Framework (CSCF) version 3.2, Neonatal services.

NSV6 Neonatal Service Level 6

OBSV Observation
A designated observation ward within an Emergency Department as defined by the ED Clinical Networks.

PAED Paediatric
A ward that has been assigned for the treatment of children's services, not including children's intensive care services.

SNAP Sub and Non-Acute Patient
A ward that has been assigned to a designated SNAP Unit.

STKU Stroke Unit
A designated stroke unit which has been assessed and approved by the Stroke Clinical Network.

TRNL Transit Lounge
A dedicated area used as an interim waiting area for overflow patients from the Emergency Department, or admitted patients waiting discharge, bed allocation on admission, or an outpatient appointment. The transit lounge is suitable for patients awaiting transport home or to another facility, awaiting for discharge medications and/or letters, awaiting minor procedures before discharge, awaiting final dose of IV antibiotics and post removal of epidural catheter (4 hour observation period).

VCAR Virtual Care
Services provided to admitted patients in their home environment under a virtual care model. Virtual care is real-time virtual exchange of images and information to provide care (source: Digital Metro North – Virtual Care).
Hospital Based Corporate Information System (HBCIS) only:
General Wards that do not have any specialisation use a 'NORM' standard ward code.

Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC):
'NORM' standard ward code is supplied as a null value.
The purpose of this data element is to inform patient safety initiatives and resource allocation.

Standard Ward code MENC has been set up to identify the Crisis Stabilisation Facility established within an existing mental health ward located at the Robina Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

Standard ward code VCAR has been added to specifically identify admitted patient care provided under a virtual care model. Whilst not limited to, its primary inclusion is for mapping of local ward code VCOV virtual care established for services provided to COVID positive patients.
Note: HBCIS local ward codes HCOV and HOMECO should not be mapped to the standard ward code VCAR and should be mapped to the standard ward code HOME, as these services to COVID positive patients are provided in a standard Hospital in the home (HITH) environment in accordance with the Queensland HITH Guideline.
This standard ward code has been implemented in HBCIS from 01 July 2023.
