Collection and Usage Attributes
When more than one type of non-pharmacological analgesia was administered or used, record all types used.

This data element should be used in conjunction with the data element: Birth event-non-pharmacological analgesia administered indicator to obtain information on if non-pharmacological analgesia was administered to a female during the birth event.

Code 02 Heat pack
A heat pack was administered to or used by a female for pain relief during the labour and/or delivery.

The type of non-pharmacological pain relief administered to or used by a female during the labour and/or delivery is not stated or unknown.
Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC):
If Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC)-baby's code type = N (Non-pharmacological analgesia) then:
Validated against list of non-pharmacological analgesia codes.
Can be blank if Birth event-non-pharmacological analgesia administered/used indicator = 1 (No) or 9 (Not stated/unknown).
Must not be blank if Birth event-non-pharmacological analgesia administered/used indicator = 2 (Yes).
This item is to be recorded for first and second stage labour, but not for third stage labour, e.g. removal of placenta.

For national reporting of the Birth event-type of analgesia administered (NHDD) data element this data element is mapped as follows:
Codes 01 through to 98 are mapped to code 88 Other analgesia.
Code 99 Not stated/unknown is mapped to code 99 Not stated/inadequately described.
Analgesia use may influence the duration of labour, may affect the health status of the baby at birth and is an indicator of obstetric intervention. Analgesia may also influence a female's satisfaction with her birth experience and is an indicator of access to anaesthesia services, i.e. epidural analgesia is not available for females in birth events where there are no anaesthetic services.
