The period of admitted patient care between a formal or statistical admission and a formal or statistical separation, characterised by only one care type.

Separation may be the result of death, discharge, transfer to another facility, or statistical separation to a different care type.

An episode of care is a phase of treatment. There may be more than one episode of care within the one hospital stay.

An episode of care ends when the principal clinical intent (and thus care type) changes or when the patient is formally separated from the facility.
